How to move all your fonts to a new computer
New computer, and every design you open shows the wrong font. Here is where your fonts live, how to bring them over by hand, and the faster way.
The fast way: one zip from FontSmith
FontSmith keeps a list of every font you save and every font file you upload. On the new computer, open My Fonts and click Reinstall everything. You get one zip with all of them.
- Sign in at apps.makerfoundryco.com/fontsmith/app/ on the new computer.
- Open My Fonts and click Reinstall everything.
- Unzip the download, select all the font files and install them (steps for Mac and Windows below).
- Restart your design and laser software so it picks the fonts up.
By hand on a Mac
Fonts you installed yourself live in your user Fonts folder. Some installers put them in the shared Fonts folder for every user instead.
- In Finder, choose Go, then Go to Folder, and type ~/Library/Fonts. Check /Library/Fonts too.
- Copy the font files to a USB drive or a cloud folder.
- On the new Mac, select all the font files, double-click, then click Install in Font Book.
By hand on Windows
C:\Windows\Fonts shows every font on the PC, including the ones Windows ships with. Fonts installed just for your account live in your user folder instead.
- Open C:\Windows\Fonts and copy the fonts you added. Then paste %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Fonts into the File Explorer address bar and copy those too.
- Move them to a USB drive or a cloud folder.
- On the new PC, select all the font files, right-click, then choose Install for all users.
Fonts that do not come along
- Subscription fonts (like Adobe Fonts) are not files you copy. Sign in to the app on the new computer and turn them back on.
- Fonts built into an app, like Cricut Design Space's own fonts, come back when you install that app.
- Check that a paid font's license lets you install it on the new computer.
Questions
Do I need to uninstall fonts from my old computer?
Not to move them. If a paid font license only covers a set number of computers, remove it from the old one once the new one is set up.
Why does my software still not show the fonts?
Most design and laser software reads your fonts when it starts. Quit it completely and open it again after installing.
