How to use downloaded fonts in Cricut Design Space
Cricut Design Space can use any font installed on your computer. Install it, restart Design Space, and find it under System fonts.
Get a font into Design Space
- Download the font from FontSmith. You get a .ttf or .otf file.
- Install it. Mac: double-click and click Install in Font Book. Windows: right-click and choose Install for all users.
- Close Design Space completely and open it again.
- Add text, open the font list and filter to System. Search for the font by name.
Make script fonts cut as one piece
Script letters overlap on screen, but Design Space still treats each letter as its own shape. Cut it like that and you get a pile of separate letters.
- Tighten the letter spacing until every letter touches the next one.
- Select the text and click Weld at the bottom of the Layers panel.
- Check the preview: the word should be one shape with no lines through the joins.
Fonts that weed easily
- Skip very thin strokes for vinyl. They tear when you weed.
- Tiny holes inside letters (in e, a and o) are hard to weed at small sizes. Go bigger or pick a bolder font.
- For heat transfer vinyl, mirror your design before cutting.
Questions
Why can't I find my font in Design Space?
Restart Design Space after installing, then filter the font list to System. Search by the font's family name, not the file name.
Can I use these fonts on the Design Space phone or iPad app?
The phone and iPad apps only see fonts installed on that device, which needs a separate font app. Using a Mac or Windows computer is the simplest way.
