Getting started
What is FontSmith?
FontSmith is a font library built for makers. Type your own text, like a shop name or a customer's order, and see it in more than 8,700 font families at once. Save the ones you like, download them to your computer, and get every font back on a new computer with one zip. It's built by Maker Foundry and lives on the same Forge account as the rest of our apps.
Is it free?
Yes. Browsing and previewing needs no account at all. A free Maker Foundry account lets you save up to 50 fonts, download every free font and upload up to 50 of your own. About 2,000 families are free. The other 6,800 or so are premium and come with FoundryPass.
How do I get started?
Go to apps.makerfoundryco.com/fontsmith/app/ and type your text in the box at the top. Every font redraws with your words. Filter by category or Free, tap a heart to save one, and open a font to see all its styles and download them. Saving and downloading ask you to sign in or make a free account.
What kinds of fonts are in it?
Seven categories: Script, Serif, Sans, Slab, Display, Mono and Specialty. Specialty covers dingbats, ornaments, stencils and other fonts that are not really letters. Many families come with several weights and italics, and some are variable fonts, marked as variable on the style list.
Downloading and installing
What file do I get when I download?
The real font file, .ttf or .otf, the way the designer made it. You can download one style, a whole family as a zip, a library you built, or a whole category at once. Every zip includes a short READ ME with install steps.
How do I install a font on a Mac?
Open the download (unzip it first if it is a zip), select all the font files, double-click, then click Install in Font Book. Restart any app that was already open so it picks the new font up.
How do I install a font on Windows?
Open the download (unzip it first if it is a zip), select all the font files, right-click, then choose Install for all users. Restart any app that was already open so it picks the new font up.
Will the font show up in LightBurn, xTool Creative Space or Cricut Design Space?
Yes, once it is installed on your computer. These programs read the fonts installed on your computer when they start, so restart the program after you install. The same goes for Silhouette Studio, Illustrator, Photoshop and Inkscape.
I got a new computer. How do I get all my fonts back?
Open My Fonts and click Reinstall everything. You get one zip with every font you saved and every font you uploaded. Unzip it on the new computer, select all, install. That is the whole job.
Can I use FontSmith on my phone or iPad?
You can browse, preview and save fonts on your phone. Installing fonts works best on a Mac or Windows computer, which is where your design and laser software runs anyway. Your saved fonts follow your account, so download them there.
Saving and libraries
How do favorites and libraries work?
Tap the heart on any font to add it to Favorites. You can also make your own libraries, like Wedding signs or Tumbler names, and download a whole library as one zip. A font can sit in more than one library and still counts once.
How many fonts can I save for free?
A free account saves up to 50 different fonts, across Favorites plus one library of your own. FoundryPass removes both limits: unlimited fonts and as many libraries as you like.
What happens to my fonts if my FoundryPass ends?
You keep everything you saved. Premium fonts go back to needing FoundryPass to download. If you saved more than 50 fonts, your library downloads lock until you trim it back to 50. Removing fonts always works. Premium styles you unlocked by uploading your own copy stay unlocked for good.
Uploading your own fonts
Can I upload fonts I already own?
Yes. Open My Fonts, go to Uploads and choose files, or drag them in. FontSmith takes .ttf, .otf, .woff, or a .zip of them, up to 20MB per file. Your uploads are private: only you can see and download them, and they are included in Reinstall everything.
Why did my upload say "Unlocked for you"?
We check every upload against the FontSmith library first. If we already have that exact font, we unlock it for you instead of storing a second copy. That works for premium fonts too, without FoundryPass, and those matches do not count toward your upload limit.
How many fonts can I upload?
Up to 50 on a free account. Matches with fonts we already have do not count. FoundryPass removes the limit.
Why was my file not accepted?
FontSmith does not take .woff2 web fonts or .ttc font collections yet. Upload the .ttf or .otf version instead. Files over 20MB, and files that are not fonts, are skipped.
FoundryPass and licensing
What does FoundryPass add to FontSmith?
Every premium font, about 6,800 families, plus unlimited saves, libraries and uploads. The same membership opens every other Maker Foundry app too, like PatchForge, TumblerForge and ToneSmith. Plans and prices are on the pricing page: apps.makerfoundryco.com/pricing
Can I use these fonts on products I sell?
Yes. Every font in FontSmith, free and premium, can be used on the things you make and sell: signs, tumblers, shirts, engraved gifts and the rest. Premium fonts need FoundryPass to download, but once you have them you can use them on your products.
