Why Map Ornaments Sell (and How to Make the Math Work)
Why map ornaments sell comes down to three things: a place carries a memory, the wood costs pennies, and the season does your marketing for you. Here is the math, the calendar and the ornament ideas to sell, plus the one part of the job that quietly eats your profit.

Why map ornaments sell: a place is a memory
Nobody needs another ornament. People buy a map ornament because of what the streets stand for. The block where they bought their first house. The town they grew up in. The city where they met. The lake where the family goes every summer. The map is a shortcut to a story, and the buyer is usually buying that story for someone else.
That is why personalization does so much work here. A generic snowflake competes on price. A map of your street with your family name and the year does not have a competitor. The buyer can't find it anywhere else, so they stop comparing.
- It names a moment. "Our First Christmas" plus the address of the new house turns a $20 object into a keepsake.
- It reads at a glance. A shoreline, a river bend or a street grid is recognisable from across the room. Water does a lot of the work.
- It is a gift, not a purchase. The gift-giver buys it, so they care about meaning more than they care about a few dollars.
- It comes back every year. A dated ornament asks for a new one next year. More on that below.
Personalized gifts are riding a wave right now. Dreamship, citing eRank and Marmalead data, reported that "personalized gift" searches on Etsy rose more than 500% year over year in Q2 2025, with ornaments among the surging categories and locations named as a personalization hook. That is second-hand data, so treat it as a direction, not a forecast.
The material math: pennies of wood per layer
Here is where ornaments get interesting. The raw material is almost free compared with the price people pay. The numbers below use a 20-sheet pack of 3mm (1/8 in) Baltic birch at 12x20 in, which sells for $61.19, or about $3.06 a sheet.
| Item | Figure | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| 3mm Baltic birch, 12x20 in | about $3.06 per sheet | $61.19 for 20 sheets (supplier listing) |
| Ornaments per sheet | about 18 (3 x 6) | Our math: 3.25 in pitch on a 12x20 sheet |
| Wood per layer | about $0.17 | Our math: $3.06 / 18 |
| Wood for a 3-layer ornament | about $0.50 | Our math: 3 x $0.17 |
| Wood, glue, ribbon and bag | roughly $1 or less | Our estimate on top of the wood |
| Retail price seen | $17-$32 | First-home ornament about $17-$20; multi-town heart $32 |
A 3.25 in pitch fits a 3 in ornament with room for kerf and a little margin. A 4 in ornament (the most common hand-held size) nests fewer per sheet, so run your own layout before you quote. The rule stays the same: lay them out in a grid, cut one sheet per layer, and the per-piece wood cost stays tiny.
What Etsy takes from a map ornament sale
If you sell on Etsy in the US, the fee stack is: a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on the total including shipping, and payment processing of 3% plus $0.25. Offsite Ads add 15% on an ad-driven sale if you made under $10k in the last year (you can opt out) or 12% at $10k and up (mandatory), capped at $100 per order. Check Etsy's own fee page, since these change.
| Sale price | Listing | Transaction 6.5% | Processing 3% + $0.25 | Total fees | Share of price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $17 | $0.20 | $1.11 | $0.76 | $2.07 | about 12% |
| $25 | $0.20 | $1.63 | $1.00 | $2.83 | about 11% |
| $32 | $0.20 | $2.08 | $1.21 | $3.49 | about 11% |
Notice the pattern. The fixed fees ($0.20 and $0.25) bite harder at low prices. That is one reason to sell ornaments in sets, bundle a matching ornament with a larger map, or push a second ornament at checkout. One order, one set of fixed fees.
Small, fast and batchable
Ornaments fit the laser well. They are small, they ship flat in an envelope, and a whole sheet of them cuts in one job. A common build is two or three layers of 1/8 in stock: an engraved backer carrying the map, and a front frame glued over it, sometimes with a contrasting wood behind.
- Collect orders for a dayBatch personalized ornaments into one sheet per layer. Every order you add to a sheet lowers your setup time per piece.
- Engrave all backers firstEngrave the map on every backer in one pass, then cut. Keep the sheet still between engrave and cut so everything stays registered.
- Cut the fronts from a contrasting stockA dark front over a light backer reads well from a distance. Maple over cherry and stained fronts over birch are both common.
- Glue, hang, bagLight glue on the frame only, a cut hole or loop for ribbon, and a flat bag. Add your attribution card here (see map attribution).
In MappSmith the ornament preset starts at 4 in and also offers 3 and 5 in. It frames the map as a bauble, circle, heart, star, tree, snowflake, bell, stocking, gift, hexagon or house, with a tag bar across the front for the name and year. Each physical layer downloads as its own file. See the map ornaments page for the layer recipe.
When map ornaments sell: the Q4 curve
Ornaments are a seasonal product with a sharp peak. US Google Trends for "map ornament" over the last 12 months shows the shape clearly. Trends gives relative interest (100 = the peak week), not search counts.
| Window | Relative interest | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Until early November | flat, around 20 | List, photograph, set cutoffs, line up stock |
| Week of Nov 9 | jumps to about 50 | Ads on, fair inventory ready |
| Through Thanksgiving | holds about 45-46 | Batch daily, keep proofs moving |
| Week of Nov 30 | 100 (peak) | Your busiest week. Turnaround is everything |
| Week of Dec 7 | about 96 | Last safe week for most shipping cutoffs |
| By Dec 21 | falls to about 44 | Gift cards, digital proof, next-year list |
Lead times matter more than usual. One long-distance heart ornament on Etsy quotes 7 to 9 business days. If your turnaround is longer than that, set an earlier cutoff, or offer a printed proof card the buyer can wrap if the ornament ships late.
Map ornament ideas to sell (and why they repeat)
The best map ornament ideas tie a place to a date. Dreamship's Christmas 2025 keyword list includes "new home ornament," "engagement ornament," "family name ornament" and "personalized ornament." Each of those works as a map.
| Idea | Map | Text |
|---|---|---|
| First Christmas in our new home | The new street, with a pin or star on the house | Family name, year, address or coordinates |
| Our first Christmas (married or engaged) | Where they met or where they live now | Names and year |
| Long distance | 2 or 3 towns, one per window or heart | Town names |
| Hometown | Downtown grid or the old neighborhood | Town name, year |
| College town | Campus and the streets around it | School year or class year |
| Lake or cabin | The shoreline, water as the hero | Lake name, coordinates |
| State with a heart | State outline with a heart on the town | Town name |
| Memorial | A place that belonged to someone | Name and dates |
Repeat buyers are built in. A dated ornament is a yearly habit. The family that bought "First Christmas in our new home 2025" is a good bet for a 2026 ornament, a new-baby ornament or a bigger wall map of the same street. Keep the files, keep the customer list, and email them in October.
Realtors buy in batches. A first-home ornament makes an easy closing gift, and one agent can order through the year. See realtor closing gifts for how makers package that offer.
State ornaments: the low-effort best seller
"State ornament" peaks in November in US Google Trends. A state outline is instantly readable, it works for transplants and for people who never left, and it pairs well with a heart or star on one town. Ready-made 50-state ornament file sets exist, which tells you the format has demand. The upgrade a custom shop can offer is the real streets of the buyer's town inside the outline.
MappSmith can frame any map in a US state outline. Browse the state maps hub for ideas by state, for example Minnesota for lake-country buyers.
The real bottleneck: one custom map file per order
The material math only works if the design work is fast. Every personalized ornament needs its own map, cropped to the right place, simplified so the streets survive the laser, with the name set and proofed. That is the part that kills margin, not the wood.
I know HOW to cut them into layers but I have no idea how to make each layer or what to use… I was told GIS software but that doesn't help me a whole lot.
A maker on the Glowforge owners forum
The manual routes are slow in ways that are hard to predict. One maker documented an OpenStreetMap export of Manhattan that pulled in far more than the island, with 146,696 objects to ungroup, and the ungroup ran overnight. On a $25 ornament you can't afford a night like that.
- Use a template. Same size, same layers, same font. Only the place and the words change.
- Drop small streets. On a 3 or 4 in piece, residential streets turn into slivers that burn away. Keep the main roads and the water.
- Proof once, in writing. A screenshot of the finished piece with names and dates, approved before you cut.
- Generate, don't trace. A tool that pulls vector streets and splits them into layers turns file creation into a few clicks. That is what MappSmith does, and at 10 maps for $10 the file costs about $1 an order (our math from our own pricing).
Questions makers ask
Are laser map ornaments profitable?
They can be. Wood for a 3-layer ornament is about $0.50 (our math, from $3.06 per 12x20 sheet and about 18 ornaments per sheet), and comparable ornaments sell for about $17 to $32. Profit depends on how long each custom file and proof takes you.
How many ornaments fit on a 12x20 sheet?
About 18 at a 3.25 in pitch, in a 3 x 6 grid (our math). Bigger ornaments fit fewer. Lay out your own size with kerf and a margin before you quote.
How much does Etsy take from a $25 ornament?
About $2.83, or roughly 11%, before any Offsite Ad (our math from the $0.20 listing fee, 6.5% transaction fee and 3% plus $0.25 processing). An Offsite Ad sale adds 12% or 15%.
When should I list map ornaments?
By early October. US search interest for map ornaments jumps the week of November 9 and peaks the week of November 30, so listings need time to be found before then.
What size should a map ornament be?
Most are about 3 to 4 in, cut from 1/8 in (3mm) stock with a contrasting backer. MappSmith defaults to 4 in and also offers 3 and 5 in.
